Sacred basket to be returned
The California Department of Parks and Recreation intends to repatriate one sacred basket to its known lineal descendant, Corina Lego. The basket was collected in the late 1890s/early 1900s, donated to State Parks in 1962, and the transfer may occur on or after June 11, 2026. No money will change hands as part of this repatriation.
Who may request repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request for repatriation of the cultural item by showing, by a preponderance of the evidence, that they are the appropriate requestor. Requests (including joint requests) must be sent to the California Department of Parks and Recreation NAGPRA Coordinator and repatriation to an approved requestor may occur on or after June 11, 2026; if competing requests are received, the Department will determine the most appropriate requestor.
