If you are a member of the Oneida Indian Nation, the New York State Museum intends to return four wampum strings tied to Chief Abraham Hill to the Oneida Indian Nation. The museum has determined these four objects meet the definition of objects of cultural patrimony and are affiliated with the Oneida Indian Nation, and repatriation may occur on or after June 11, 2026.
Who May Request Repatriation Claims
If you are a lineal descendant, an Indian Tribe, or a Native Hawaiian organization not named in this notice, you may submit a written request for repatriation showing by a preponderance of the evidence that you are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. If competing requests are received, the New York State Museum will determine the most appropriate requestor, and requests for joint repatriation are treated as a single request; repatriation may occur on or after June 11, 2026.
