Return of Sacred Stone Pipe

Peabody Institute of Archaeology intends to repatriate one sacred object — a stone pipe (accession 192/22972) — that it determined is culturally affiliated with the Pawnee Nation. The repatriation may occur on or after June 11, 2026; the pipe was transferred to RSPI in 1962 from the Merrimack Valley Textile Museum.

Who May Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not listed may submit a written request for repatriation to the Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archaeology; requestors must show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. If competing requests are received, RSPI will determine the most appropriate requestor; joint requests are treated as a single request.

No Known Hazardous Substances

The notice states there is no known presence of any potentially hazardous substances in the stone pipe (accession 192/22972).
