Bill Overview
Analyzed Economic Effects
4 provisions identified: 4 benefits, 0 costs, 0 mixed.
National gun violence data and reports
If enacted, the Director would review DOJ laws, programs, and data on gun violence and set a research plan. The Director would work with agencies such as Health and Human Services, Veterans Affairs, Education, and Homeland Security to fill data gaps. A report to Congress would be due within 1 year of enactment and every year after.
New Justice Department office on gun violence
If enacted, the Attorney General would set up an Office of Gun Violence Prevention in the Justice Department and appoint a Director. The Office would coordinate DOJ work on gun violence and help oversee the federal background check system for gun sales. An Advisory Council would start within 180 days and meet at least every three months. Congress would be able to fund the office with "such sums as are necessary."
Crisis help for communities after shootings
If enacted, the Director would help communities hit by shootings with crisis response. Help could include access to mental health services, anti-trafficking work, training for first responders and local offices, and suicide prevention. This would apply after events like mass, school, gang, or domestic violence shootings. The work would be done with input from the Advisory Council.
Public education on safe firearm storage
If enacted, the Director would run public education and awareness campaigns on federal gun laws, secure storage, and suicide prevention. Messages would target firearm owners, parents and guardians of minors, and professionals serving hard-hit communities. Campaigns would aim to reduce risks and connect people to existing programs.
