Sponsored By: Representative Rep. Brownley, Julia [D-CA-26]
In Committee
Summary
This bill would extend CHAMPVA child medical coverage so a dependent can stay eligible until their 26th birthday, regardless of marital status. It changes the age cutoff in title 38, section 1781(c), to keep more young adults on CHAMPVA longer.
Show full summary
- Families: Dependents would remain eligible for CHAMPVA medical care until age 26, which could help households keep health coverage for young adults.
- Eligibility limits: The extension applies notwithstanding certain conditions in section 101(4)(A)(i) and (iii), but it does not apply to children described in section 101(4)(A)(ii).
- Program rules: The bill only changes the statutory age qualification. It does not add new funding, new eligibility rules beyond the age change, phase-ins, sunsets, or extra enforcement steps.
The amended rule would apply to medical care provided on or after the law’s enactment date.
