Free school meals if your state opts in
Starting with school years that begin on or after July 1, 2025, your state could choose a statewide free‑meals option for schools. To use it, the state would have to add non‑federal money so schools get paid the free‑meal rate for all meals at certain schools. Those “applicable schools” would be defined by the Secretary of Agriculture. The option would count eligible students across all applicable schools statewide and set the minimum required share to zero, using existing USDA calculation rules. If your state opts in and your child’s school is applicable, your child could get free school meals.
