Immediate leak rules for gas pipelines
If enacted, a PHMSA final rule on gas pipeline leak detection and repair (issued Jan. 17, 2025) would take effect on the day this Act is enacted. Pipeline operators would need to follow the rule right away, without delay. The Secretary of Transportation could later issue even stricter safety standards than this rule or any rule in effect at enactment. Communities near pipelines could see leaks found and fixed sooner, improving safety and cutting emissions.
