NOAA Data Preservation Act

Sponsored By: Representative Elfreth

Introduced

Summary

Protecting uninterrupted cloud storage for NOAA data sets. This bill would stop the Secretary of Commerce from canceling a cloud contract for a NOAA data set unless the department develops a plan to move the data to another cloud service provider and coordinates with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Administrator to ensure continuous storage and protection, and it defines "cloud service provider" by reference to section 2200 of the Homeland Security Act (6 U.S.C. 650).

Protect NOAA weather and environmental data

If enacted, the bill would stop the Commerce Secretary from cancelling a cloud contract that holds NOAA data unless two steps happen. First, the Secretary would need a plan to keep the data stored without interruption. The plan must include how to move the data to a different cloud provider and related reporting systems. Second, the Secretary would need to work with the NOAA Administrator to ensure the data stay protected during any change. The bill would use the Homeland Security Act definition of “cloud service provider.” The text reviewed does not specify an effective date.
