Bill Overview
Analyzed Economic Effects
2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.
Faster loan relief for public service
If enacted, new Federal Direct Loans would get staged forgiveness for public service work. After 24 monthly payments, 15% of the original amount due would be canceled. After 48, 72, and 96 payments, another 15% would be canceled each time (60% total after 96). After 120 payments, the rest of your principal and interest would be canceled. The Education Department could verify your job automatically or ask you and your employer to complete a form. Your loan would be put in deferment while cancellation is processed. Interest for any year when part of your loan is canceled, and interest between your application and approval, would also be canceled.
Stricter timing for Public Service forgiveness
If enacted, you would need to be in a public service job during each of the 120 payments for them to count. The bill would also create a separate forgiveness path for new Federal Direct Loans made after enactment that are not in default. This could make current rules stricter for some borrowers and offer a new option for others.
