Summary
Raises and indexes the Social Security lump-sum death payment. This bill would set the lump-sum base amount at $2,900 and increase it for deaths in calendar years after 2025 by the percent change in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers from October 2024 to October of the prior year. The updated amount would be rounded to the nearest $10 and applies to deaths on or after January 1, 2025.

Higher lump-sum Social Security payment
If enacted, this bill would set the one-time Social Security lump-sum death payment at $2,900 for deaths on or after January 1, 2025. For deaths in the calendar year 2025, the payment would be $2,900. For deaths in calendar years after 2025, the payment would be $2,900 increased by the percent change in the CPI-W between October 2024 and October of the year before the year of death. The resulting dollar amount would be rounded to the nearest $10. This change would apply only to the section 202(i) lump-sum death payment.
