Home tax credit for caregivers

If enacted, you would be able to claim a new tax credit for home work that helps an older or disabled relative live with you. The credit would cover safety, mobility, or accessibility expenses on your main home, up to $8,000 per taxpayer each year. The credit would be reduced by $50 for each $1,000 (or fraction) your modified AGI is over $200,000 (single) or $400,000 (joint). Fifty percent of the credit after that reduction would be treated as refundable. You would not be able to also claim a deduction or other credit for the same expenses to the extent of this credit, and your home's tax basis would be reduced by the credit amount. The Treasury would issue rules to define eligible work and who qualifies. The credit would apply to tax years beginning after December 31, 2026.
