Expressing support for the designation of February 2025 as "Hawaiian Language Month" or "'Ōlelo Hawai'i Month".
Sponsored By: Representative Tokuda
Introduced
Summary
Celebrate and support the revival of the Hawaiian language. This resolution would designate February 2025 as Hawaiian Language Month, also called Olelo Hawai‘i Month, and would urge preserving, protecting, and promoting use of Olelo Hawai‘i consistent with the Native American Languages Act. It highlights that Hawaiian is the native language of Native Hawaiians, that a late-19th-century ban contributed to near extinction by the 1980s, and that community immersion programs, state education efforts, university programs, and recent federal grants have fueled revitalization.
