Sponsored By: Representative Del. Plaskett, Stacey E. [D-VI-At Large]
Introduced
Summary
APOL1-Mediated Kidney Disease (AMKD) awareness is the goal. This resolution would designate the last Tuesday of April each year as AMKD Awareness Day and express support for that observance. It would encourage Americans to learn about kidney disease and urge people with ancestry from Western or Central Africa to consider genetic testing for APOL1 variants, noting that kidney disease affects about 35.5 million Americans, more than 550,000 are on dialysis, and Black Americans make up 13 percent of the population but 30 percent of those with kidney failure.
