Job and promotion letters for NY state workers

Beginning on the 90th day after it became law, appointing authorities must give you a written appointment or promotion letter within 14 days of your start date. The letter must state your appointment type (for example, permanent, provisional, or temporary), job type, and, if not permanent or full-time, the expected end date and percent time. It must list the position’s jurisdictional class. It must state any probation period’s minimum and maximum and explain your tenure rights after finishing probation. It must show your starting pay and the full salary range for the title. If your pay is lower because you came from a higher grade, it must explain why. It must name the bargaining unit and give the union’s contact or website. If the offer is to a trainee title, it must show the traineeship length, the target title and grade, all advancement rules, the review schedule, and any performance advances. It must note any hold item on another job, with when it ends and the terms to return. It must include benefits info with links, like health insurance, retirement, and the state deferred compensation plan, plus any other required info. If you think anything in the letter is wrong, tell the appointing authority. They must review and, if wrong, send a corrected letter within 60 days. If no error is found, they must tell you the original letter is correct.
