Training and rules for police peer support

The state division sets rules for law enforcement peer support programs. Rules can require minimum training and certifications, approve courses, set recordkeeping, and require retraining. These standards guide who can serve as a peer support specialist and how programs keep records. The law takes effect 90 days after it becomes law. Agencies can issue needed rules right away and finish them before the start date.

Peer support privacy for police, with exceptions

The law keeps peer support talks, notes, and records private. Specialists and participants cannot share them with anyone not in the session. Sharing is allowed for specific threats of suicide, self-harm, serious bodily harm or death, or child abuse or neglect, and it is required when the law mandates it, a crime is admitted, or a court orders it. A participant can consent in writing to share their own communications. Before the first session, the specialist must give a written notice explaining the privacy rule and these exceptions.
