A board of eight trustees controls the association’s funds and property. The board includes the president, vice‑president, secretary, treasurer, and four trustees. Members elect them at the annual meeting under the by‑laws.
The law creates the Bohemia Volunteer Firefighter's Benevolent Association. You can become a member by writing the department secretary before the first meeting, by attending that meeting, or later under the by‑laws. The association supports the Bohemia volunteer fire department.
The association collects insurance premium taxes tied to fire policies on property in the area it protects. This covers the Town of Islip in Suffolk County and any other area the department serves. An officer named in the by‑laws collects the money under state insurance rules. The funds must be used only for the association’s purposes set in law. This applies to premiums received on and after January 1, 2026.
You are eligible if you are, were, or will be an active volunteer in the Bohemia department or a fire corporation in the Bohemia fire district. People who earned exempt volunteer firefighter status through Bohemia service also qualify. People removed for cause, expelled, or dropped and not reinstated cannot join. Membership ends if you withdraw before five years of actual service. Non‑exempt members lose membership if they move out of the district or if their area no longer has Bohemia fire protection.
