More local food for families and farms

The law creates the Vermonters Feeding Vermonters Grant Program at the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets. The Vermont Foodbank gets grants to buy local food straight from Vermont farms and distribute it. The Foodbank can give subgrants to its partner sites to buy from farms of any size. Some grants focus on culturally preferred foods or keeping local relationships. Local food follows the state's definition of "local." This expands access to local food for low-income households and supports Vermont farms.

Foodbank grants start July 2025, need funds

The act takes effect on July 1, 2025. The Agency must run the grant program only if the state provides a FY2026 General Fund appropriation for it. The law does not set a dollar amount. If the FY2026 money is not provided, the Agency does not have to implement the program.
