The Secretary may use Coast Guard funds to pay for elementary and secondary schooling for children of Coast Guard members stationed outside the continental United States when local schools can’t meet their needs. The cost must not be higher than what the Department of Defense pays in that area. If public transportation does not regularly reach the local schools, the Secretary may pay to transport the children between the school and the Coast Guard facility under rules the Secretary sets.
