Title 16 › Chapter CHAPTER 1— - NATIONAL PARKS, MILITARY PARKS, MONUMENTS, AND SEASHORES › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER XLVI— - SHENANDOAH NATIONAL PARK AND GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK › § 403e
The Secretary of the Interior can accept land given for free inside Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks. If the land comes with leases made as part of its sale, those leases must be sent to and approved by the Secretary and cannot last longer than the lifetime of the original owner. The Secretary may also lease park land to current occupants — people, schools, religious groups, companies, or partnerships. Leases to individuals run only for that person’s lifetime. Leases to other groups can run up to 20 years and may be renewed if the Secretary chooses. He may accept land that keeps reserved rights-of-way or easements.
