Title 2 › Chapter CHAPTER 9D— - OFFICE OF SENATE LEGAL COUNSEL › § 288g
Counsel must advise and work with certain Senate officials and offices on legal matters. That includes the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia on contempt cases certified by the President pro tempore under section 194; the Senate committee that points out court cases important to the Senate; oversight offices (Comptroller General, GAO, Senate Office of Legislative Counsel, and Congressional Research Service) without affecting their duties; Senators or staff not covered by section 288c about getting private lawyers; top Senate officers on subpoenas or requests to withdraw papers that raise Senate privilege; and any committee or subcommittee on rules and issues for investigations. Counsel must keep legal research files from court cases involving Congress. Public court papers and non‑confidential memos can be released under Senate rules. Counsel must also do other duties the Senate assigns that fit this chapter.
