The Secretary will give competitive grants from the funds set aside under section 6661(b)(2) to expand and share proven, new ways to teach American history, civics and government, and geography. Grants must target better student learning and teaching, and should be innovative, able to grow, accountable, and help low-income and other underserved students. Projects may include hands-on civic activities and lessons about the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Grants last no more than 3 years and can be renewed once for an extra 2 years. The Secretary should try to spread grants across urban, suburban, and rural areas. Applicants must apply when and how the Secretary requires. Eligible entity: a college or another nonprofit or for-profit group with proven experience making evidence-based teaching programs for these subjects.
