Title 38 › Part PART II— - GENERAL BENEFITS › Chapter CHAPTER 17— - HOSPITAL, NURSING HOME, DOMICILIARY, AND MEDICAL CARE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER VIII— - HEALTH CARE OF PERSONS OTHER THAN VETERANS › § 1783
The VA may offer bereavement counseling to two groups: people who were getting certain VA services when a veteran died unexpectedly or while the veteran was in a VA hospice-like program; and immediate family, including parents, of service members who die on active duty in the line of duty, if the death was not due to the service member’s misconduct. Counseling can be given at VA readjustment and mental-health centers. Bereavement counseling is short-term help the VA finds reasonable and necessary for the emotional and psychological stress after a death.
