Gives official meanings for key words used in the program. Administrator: the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Certified engine configuration: a new, rebuilt, or remanufactured engine setup that has been approved by the EPA or the California Air Resources Board, meets stricter emission standards, and — if it replaces an engine — the old engine was removed and returned to the supplier to be remanufactured to higher standards or scrapped. Eligible entity: a government or port agency that handles transportation or air quality; a nonprofit that helps or represents diesel fleet owners or promotes transportation or air quality; or a private owner of diesel vehicles used under contract or lease with a federal agency or one of the listed government agencies, if they follow EPA’s rules for use and approval. Emerging technology: a technology not yet verified by EPA or the California Air Resources Board but for which an acceptable application and test plan for verification has been submitted. Fleet: one or more diesel vehicles or diesel engines, mobile or stationary. Heavy-duty truck: has the meaning given to “heavy duty vehicle” in section 7521 of this title. Medium-duty truck: defined by the Administrator by regulation. State: the several States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the United States Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Verified technology: a pollution control technology (including retrofits or auxiliary power units) verified by the EPA or the California Air Resources Board.
