Notice of Proposed Withdrawal and Opportunity for Public Meeting; Nevada

Published Date: 1/14/2025

Notice

Summary

The government wants to protect about 1,805 acres of land near the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe by pausing new claims or sales on it for up to 20 years. This means no new mining or land grabs can happen there while the land stays managed by the Bureau of Land Management. People have until April 14, 2025, to share their thoughts or ask for a public meeting about this plan.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Proposed 20-Year Land Withdrawal

The Secretary proposes to withdraw about 1,805 acres near the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe from settlement, sale, location, or entry under the public land laws, including from entry under U.S. mining laws, for a period of up to 20 years, subject to valid existing rights. If approved, you could not file new mining claims or acquire these lands under those public land laws for up to 20 years.

Temporary 2-Year Land Segregation

Publication of this notice temporarily segregates the same 1,805 acres from settlement, sale, location, or entry under the public land laws, including mining laws, until January 14, 2027 while the withdrawal application is processed. During this temporary segregation you cannot file new claims or acquire the land under those public land laws unless the application is denied or approved earlier.

Protects Paiute Tribal Lands and Economy

The proposed withdrawal aims to protect natural and cultural resources on lands adjacent to the Las Vegas Tribe of Paiute Indians and is described as important to the Tribe's economic sustainability and cultural preservation. The lands would remain under Bureau of Land Management management to help preserve those values.
