Commerce Slaps Duties on India's Subsidized Sodium Nitrite
Published Date: 2/24/2026
Notice
Summary
The U.S. Department of Commerce found that some Indian companies making sodium nitrite got unfair government help between June 2022 and December 2023. Because of this, extra duties (taxes) will apply to their products to keep things fair for U.S. businesses. These changes take effect starting February 24, 2026, and could affect prices and trade with India.
Analyzed Economic Effects
4 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 3 costs, 1 mixed.
Countervailing Duties on Indian Sodium Nitrite
If you import sodium nitrite from the named Indian producers, Commerce determined countervailable subsidy rates of 12.01 percent ad valorem for 2022 and 6.07 percent ad valorem for 2023 for Deepak Nitrite Limited (and the same review-specific rate for Kronox). These duty rates are part of the final results effective February 24, 2026.
Retroactive Duty Assessment on 2022–2023 Entries
Commerce will assess countervailing duties on entries of subject merchandise for the periods June 21, 2022, through December 31, 2022, and January 1, 2023, through December 31, 2023, at the ad valorem rates listed in the final results. Liquidity and payment obligations for relevant entries will be addressed through U.S. Customs and Border Protection according to the assessment instructions issued after publication.
Cash Deposit Requirement for New Shipments
U.S. Customs and Border Protection will collect cash deposits of estimated countervailing duties for shipments entered or withdrawn for consumption on or after the publication date (February 24, 2026) in the amount shown for 2023 (6.07% for the listed companies). For firms not reviewed, CBP will continue to collect cash deposits at the all-others rate or the most recent company-specific rate as appropriate, and these cash deposit requirements will remain in effect until further notice.
Possible Effects on Prices and Trade With India
The Department of Commerce states these duties could affect prices and trade with India. The final results and cash deposit instructions take effect February 24, 2026, and may influence trade flows and costs for sodium nitrite imports.
