FAA to Bell Helicopter Owners: Check Those Rotors Now!

Published Date: 4/7/2026

Proposed Rule

Summary

If you fly Bell Model 430 helicopters, listen up! The FAA wants to update safety rules about some key rotor parts to keep your ride safe and sound. They’re asking for feedback by May 22, 2026, and these changes might affect maintenance schedules and costs.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 3 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Inspections and Replacement Rules

If you operate a Bell Model 430 helicopter (serials 49001 through 49129), the FAA proposes an airworthiness directive that would require following Transport Canada AD CF-2024-40 (with stated exceptions). The rule would require reviewing part-time records, recurring detailed inspections of main rotor pitch link components, re-identifying certain components, and replacing parts that fail inspection; the FAA estimates this AD would affect 29 U.S.-registered helicopters.

Magnetic Particle Testing Narrowed

The FAA removed the requirement to perform a magnetic particle inspection (MPI) after every detailed inspection. Now an MPI is required only if the detailed inspection finds any linear indications on the main rotor clevis (a linear indication means the longest dimension is at least three times the smallest), which reduces routine MPI testing.

No Manufacturer Reporting Required

Although Transport Canada AD CF-2024-40 asks operators to report certain findings to the manufacturer, this FAA proposed AD does not require sending those reports to Bell. You still must do the inspections and corrective actions, but submitting the information to the manufacturer is not mandated by this FAA AD.

Certain Pitch Links Not Time-Limited

The FAA clarifies that main rotor pitch link assemblies part numbers 430-010-411-109, -109FM, -111, and -111FM are not required to be replaced before a life limit because they are replaced on-condition under the Airworthiness Limitations Section. The FAA therefore removed the replacement-before-life-limit requirement for those part numbers in this AD.
