Repatriation Available to Affiliated Tribes
You (an affiliated Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization) may receive repatriation of human remains and funerary objects identified by the Kansas State Historical Society on or after May 18, 2026. KSHS determined a cultural affiliation with the Kaw Nation, Oklahoma, and the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes (Wichita, Keechi, Waco, & Tawakonie), Oklahoma, covering 59 individuals and 1,915 associated funerary objects.
How to Request Repatriation and Competing Claims
Tribes, Native Hawaiian organizations, or lineal descendants may submit written repatriation requests to Dr. Nicole Klarmann at the Kansas State Historical Society (6425 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66615-1099; email [email protected]). Repatriation may occur on or after May 18, 2026; KSHS will resolve competing requests and treats joint repatriation requests as a single request.
