Starting January 1, 2027, pipeline companies must follow the updated ASTM F1055 standard for certain plastic pipe fittings. Upgraded Standard Aims to Improve Safety

PHMSA incorporated the ASTM F1055 (2022) standard to maintain or improve public safety by addressing equipment design, testing, and operational practices. PHMSA concluded the updated standard will maintain or enhance protection of public safety.

Operators Must Use ASTM F1055 (2022)

If you operate or run pipeline facilities, you must follow the reapproved ASTM F1055 (2022) standard for electrofusion-type polyethylene fittings starting January 1, 2027. PHMSA authorized compliance after June 23, 2026, and set a comment deadline of June 23, 2026; the agency expects the update will reduce regulatory confusion and that total costs to the regulated community will be less than zero.

Agency Expects Better Natural Gas Availability

PHMSA expects the updated standard will help increase national pipeline transportation capacity and improve pipeline operators' ability to provide reliable, affordable natural gas. PHMSA says the rule is not a 'significant energy action' under Executive Order 13211.

Standards Access and No New Paperwork

The incorporated ASTM F1055 (2022) standard is made available through ASTM's reading room and via publisher contact information in Sec. 192.7, and PHMSA states this rule will not create, amend, or rescind any information collections under the Paperwork Reduction Act. This helps operators access the standard without new federal paperwork burdens.
