Updated Corrosion Standard for Pipelines

You will get safer and more reliable natural gas delivery because pipeline companies must follow the updated NACE SP0206-2016 corrosion detection standard starting January 1, 2027. PHMSA says the update will maintain or improve public safety and help pipelines provide abundant, reliable, affordable natural gas.

Lower Compliance Burdens for Operators

If you operate a pipeline, adopting the 2016 edition of NACE SP0206 should reduce regulatory confusion and compliance burdens because PHMSA is replacing older references with the 2016 edition. PHMSA expects most operators already follow the standard, expects no significant costs, and states total costs to the regulated community are estimated to be "less than zero."

Early Voluntary Compliance Allowed

If you run a pipeline company, PHMSA authorizes compliance with the updated NACE SP0206 standard after June 23, 2026, and the updated standard will take effect January 1, 2027 unless adverse comments are received by June 23, 2026. This lets operators choose to follow the updated standard before the official effective date.
