Pipelines Must Use NACE SP0502-2025

Starting January 1, 2027, pipeline operators must follow the updated industry standard NACE SP0502-2025 (revised April 28, 2025) for external corrosion direct assessment. References to the 2025 edition replace prior references to the 2010 edition in multiple 49 CFR sections.

No Significant Cost Expected for Operators

PHMSA expects this update will reduce regulatory confusion and compliance burdens and estimates the total costs on the regulated community will be less than zero, with compliance costs for any remaining operators expected to be negligible. The agency states the Regulatory Flexibility Act does not apply because no significant economic impact on a substantial number of small entities is expected.

Aims to Maintain or Improve Public Safety

PHMSA says the updated NACE SP0502-2025 standard will maintain or improve public safety by better detecting and preventing pipeline corrosion, and will help align regulations with innovations in practices and technology. The rule also states it will help increase pipeline transportation capacity and improve operators' ability to provide reliable, affordable natural gas.
