Summary

NOAA is thinking about letting Coeur Alaska do some dock repairs in Berners Bay, Alaska, even though it might bother local marine mammals a bit. They want your thoughts on this plan and a possible one-year extension if everything goes well. You’ve got until May 29, 2026, to speak up before they make a final call!

Dock Repair Keeps Mine Supply Lines Open

The Kensington Dock is the only marine access in Berners Bay for importing supplies and fuel and exporting mined ore concentrate from the remote mine site. The proposed project would replace two damaged mooring dolphins to restore the dock so it can continue to safely berth vessels; NMFS is considering issuing a one-year incidental harassment authorization to allow those repairs.

Daytime Pile Driving, Short Timeline

Pile driving related to the dock repairs is expected sometime after July 1, 2026, with about 33 days of in-water pile driving spread over 8 to 10 weeks, conducted only during daylight hours. The plan calls for offsetting replacement piles so dock operations can continue, no simultaneous pile driving, and a 3-day contingency to the 30-day estimate.
