HVS Provides Key Quarterly Housing Statistics

The HVS produces the only quarterly statistics on rental vacancy rates and homeownership rates for the United States, the four census regions, all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and the 75 largest metropolitan statistical areas. Policy analysts, program managers, congressional staff, and investment firms use these data to analyze housing supply, cost, affordability, project mortgage demand, and for economic forecasting.

Monthly HVS Data Collection Continues

The Census Bureau will continue collecting the Housing Vacancy Survey (HVS) every month with no changes. About 59,000 landlords, rental agents, and neighbors respond voluntarily; each response averages 0.05 hours and the total burden is 2,950 hours.
