Ford Asks to Skip Recall Over Van Display Rules

Published Date: 6/22/2026

Notice

Summary

Ford found that some 2022-2025 Ford Transit vans don’t fully meet a safety rule about controls and displays. They asked the government to decide if this issue is minor enough to ignore for safety reasons. People have until July 22, 2026, to share their thoughts, and no money or recalls are expected right now.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 3 costs, 0 mixed.

19,341 Transits have mislabeled Start button

About 19,341 model year 2022–2025 Ford Transit vehicles built between June 4, 2021 and June 25, 2025 at the Kansas City Assembly Plant have a Push To Start (PTS) button labeled "Power Start Stop" instead of the FMVSS No. 101 required "Engine Start Stop" label. This is a noncompliance with FMVSS No. 101 paragraph S5.2.1 for controls and displays.

Ford petitioned to avoid owner notification and remedy

Ford filed a petition with NHTSA on August 13, 2025 asking that this labeling noncompliance be declared inconsequential so Ford would be exempted from the statutory duties to notify owners and to provide a remedy under 49 U.S.C. 30118 and 30120. A grant would exempt Ford only from those notification and remedy duties for vehicles it no longer controlled when it discovered the issue.

Labeling corrected in production after June 25, 2025

Ford states it corrected the labeling error in production and that all Ford Transit vehicles built after June 25, 2025 will bear the compliant "Engine Start Stop" label on the Push To Start button. Future purchasers of Transit vehicles produced after that date should not receive the noncompliant label.

Dealers remain prohibited from selling noncompliant vehicles

NHTSA notes that even if a petition exempts Ford from owner notification and remedy duties, any decision does not relieve vehicle distributors and dealers of the prohibition on sale, offer for sale, or introduction into interstate commerce of the noncompliant vehicles under their control after Ford notified them the noncompliance existed.
