University to Return 34 Native Items

The University of Northern Colorado intends to repatriate 34 cultural items — including 3 unassociated funerary objects, 28 objects of cultural patrimony, and 3 sacred objects — that have a cultural affiliation with Pueblo communities, particularly Pueblo de San Ildefonso. These items may be returned on or after August 14, 2026.

Tribes and Descendants Can Request Repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization may submit a written request for repatriation (showing affiliation by a preponderance of the evidence) to Dr. Andrew Creekmore at the University of Northern Colorado. If competing requests are received, UNC will determine the appropriate requestor; joint requests are treated as a single request. Repatriation may occur on or after August 14, 2026.
