University finds five baskets sacred

California State University, Sacramento determined that five miniature baskets are "sacred objects/objects of cultural patrimony" and that they have a cultural affiliation with the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. The baskets were donated in 1962 and curated under accession 1974-32-2-2-a-e.

Repatriation can occur starting Sept 2, 2026

The notice states repatriation of the five baskets may occur on or after September 2, 2026. Requests for repatriation must be sent in writing to Dr. Mark R. Wheeler at California State University, Sacramento (6000 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95819) or by the provided email.

Who may request repatriation

Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not identified in the notice may submit a written repatriation request and must show, by a preponderance of the evidence, that they are a lineal descendant or are culturally affiliated.

Competing and joint request rules

If competing repatriation requests are received, California State University, Sacramento must determine the most appropriate requestor before repatriation. Requests submitted jointly are treated as a single request and not as competing requests.
