Repatriation of 20 Sacred Objects
California State University, Sacramento plans to return 20 cultural items that it has determined are sacred objects and culturally affiliated with the Hui Iwi Kuamoʻō. The 20 items include one walrus tusk necklace, 15 kapa (tapa) samples, three flaked stone tools from a Mauna Kea quarry, and one wood cargo hook found near Kalapana; repatriation may occur on or after September 2, 2026.
Who Can Request Repatriation
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not named in the notice can submit a written request to receive the items if they show by a preponderance of the evidence that they are a lineal descendant or culturally affiliated. Send requests to the authorized representative at California State University, Sacramento; competing requests will be resolved by the University and joint requests count as a single request, and repatriation may occur on or after September 2, 2026.
