Summary

In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, has completed an inventory of human remains and associated funerary objects and has determined that there is a cultural affiliation between the human remains and associated funerary objects and Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations in this notice.

Osage Nation Identified as Affiliated

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District determined that human remains representing at least eight individuals and 371 associated funerary objects are culturally affiliated with The Osage Nation. This determination was made under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).

Repatriation Eligible Starting September 2, 2026

Repatriation of the identified human remains and associated funerary objects may occur on or after September 2, 2026. Written requests for repatriation must be sent to Jenna Domeischel, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District, 1222 Spruce Street, ATTN: CEMVS-EC-Z, St. Louis, MO 63103, or by email at [email protected].

Inventory Details and Museum Location

The inventory lists human remains from seven archaeological sites (23CR80, 23CR14, 23CR22, 23CR54, 23CR58, 23CR115, and 23WA61) collected for the Meramec Park Lake Project and identifies 371 associated funerary objects (including 116 faunal remains, 109 chipped stone, and 102 ceramic sherds). The materials are currently located at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, Illinois.
