Summary

In accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, California State Office (BLM CA) has completed an inventory of human remains and associated funerary objects (belongings) and has determined that there is a cultural affiliation between the human remains and associated funerary belongings and Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations in this notice.

Listed Tribes Eligible to Repatriate Remains

The Bureau of Land Management-California has determined that ancestral remains representing at least five individuals and 117 associated funerary belongings from Washoe County, Nevada are culturally affiliated with the Cedarville Rancheria (CA), Fort Bidwell Indian Community (CA), Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe (NV), Reno-Sparks Indian Colony (NV), Summit Lake Paiute Tribe (NV), and Susanville Indian Rancheria (CA). These holdings are housed at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, Nevada, and repatriation may occur on or after September 14, 2026.

Who May Request Repatriation and Process

Repatriation requests may be submitted by any one or more of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations named in this notice, or by a lineal descendant or other Tribe/organization that shows by a preponderance of the evidence that they are lineal descendants or culturally affiliated. If competing requests are received, the BLM California must decide the most appropriate requestor before repatriation; joint requests count as a single request.
