FAA Eyes Airbus Pump Fixes: Planes Stay Aloft, Bureaucrats Busy

Summary

The FAA proposes to adopt a new airworthiness directive (AD) for certain Airbus SAS Model A350-941 and A350-1041 airplanes. This proposed AD was prompted by reports of failure of hydraulic engine driven pumps (EDPs) of the standard EDP-06. This proposed AD would require, depending on airplane configuration, modifying the hydraulic monitoring and control application (HMCA), accomplishing applicable concurrent requirements, revising the existing airplane flight manual (AFM), and replacing affected parts. This proposed AD would also prohibit the installation of affected parts and prohibit the installation of certain HMCA software. The FAA is proposing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.

A350 operators must do safety mods

If you operate Airbus A350-941 or A350-1041 airplanes, the FAA would require modifying the hydraulic monitoring and control application (HMCA), updating HMCA software, revising the airplane flight manual (AFM), and replacing affected parts as specified in EASA AD 2026-0074 (dated April 8, 2026). The FAA estimates the work could take up to 84 work-hours at $85/hour (up to $9,228) plus parts ($7,140), for a cost per airplane of up to $16,368 and a total U.S. cost of up to $589,248 for 36 affected U.S.-registered airplanes.

Installation of older parts and software banned

The proposed AD would prohibit installing the affected hydraulic parts and would prohibit installation of HMCA software standard S5.0 or earlier on any affected airplane, per EASA AD 2026-0074 (dated April 8, 2026). This means maintenance and repair providers cannot legally install those parts or that older HMCA software on the listed A350 airplanes if the AD is adopted.

Completing mods ends older AD duties

If you accomplish the specified modification in paragraph (1) of EASA AD 2026-0074, it would terminate certain requirements of FAA AD 2018-19-19; and accomplishing the modification specified in paragraph (6) of EASA AD 2026-0074 would terminate certain requirements of FAA AD 2019-03-08. In other words, completing these new modifications removes the need to comply with those older AD paragraphs for the affected airplanes.

Manufacturer warranty may reduce operator costs

The FAA notes the parts manufacturer has indicated some or all costs of this proposed AD may be covered under warranty, which could reduce the cost impact on affected operators. That means actual out-of-pocket cost per airplane could be lower than the FAA’s estimated up to $16,368 if warranty coverage applies.
