Montana SNAP: Ban on Sugary Foods
The State of Montana requested a SNAP demonstration to change SNAP's definition of food so that SNAP benefits could not be used to buy "high-sugar beverages, energy drinks, candy, and prepared desserts." Montana formally requested the project on March 31, 2026, asked to implement it on September 30, 2026, and the public comment deadline is October 15, 2026. If approved and implemented, SNAP participants in Montana would no longer be able to use SNAP benefits to purchase those listed items.
