FAA Orders Boeing 737 Fuel Shutoff Valve Seal Inspections

Published Date: 10/27/2026

Rule

Summary

The FAA is requiring certain Boeing 737-8, 737-9, and 737-8200 planes to get a close look at their engine fuel shutoff valve seals because leaks were found. Starting December 1, 2026, inspections and leak tests must be done to fix any problems and keep flights safe. This means airlines will need to act quickly to avoid fuel leaks, which could cost time and money but keep passengers safe.

Analyzed Economic Effects

4 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Mandatory inspections and leak tests

If you fly on Boeing Model 737-8, 737-9, or 737-8200 airplanes, the FAA requires detailed inspections of the form-in-place (FiP) gasket at the engine fuel shutoff valve access panel and a fluid leak test starting December 1, 2026. The rule requires correcting incorrect sealant installation or damaged preformed seals and repeating leak tests until no leak is found to address fuel leaks that could lead to a fire on the ground.

Estimated inspection costs for U.S. fleet

The FAA estimates this AD affects 433 U.S.-registered airplanes and that each inspection or leak test action takes 1 work-hour at $85 per hour. The FAA reports the total estimated cost on U.S. operators for the required inspections and leak tests is up to $36,805.

On-condition repair costs and warranty note

If inspections or leak tests find problems, the FAA estimates replacement could cost up to 3 work-hours plus parts, for a maximum of up to $1,255 per product (up to $255 labor plus up to $1,000 parts). Boeing has stated some or all costs may be covered under warranty, which could reduce operators' out-of-pocket expenses.

No significant small-entity economic impact

The FAA certified that this AD "will not have a significant economic impact, positive or negative, on a substantial number of small entities" under the Regulatory Flexibility Act. This means the agency determined the rule does not impose a significant economic burden on small businesses as a group.
