Boeing 757 Cabin Monitors Need Safety Leashes Before They Fall

Published Date: 10/27/2026

Rule

Summary

The FAA is requiring certain Boeing 757-200 and -300 airplanes to replace video monitors mounted on passenger service units (PSUs) if they lack backup safety lanyards. This fix stops monitors from falling off during hard landings, keeping passengers safer. Airlines must complete this upgrade by December 1, 2026, ensuring safer flights without breaking the bank.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Stops PSU monitors from detaching

You will be safer on certain Boeing 757-200 and -300 airplanes because the FAA requires replacing passenger service unit (PSU)-mounted video monitors that do not have secondary retention lanyards. The rule aims to prevent monitors from becoming fully detached or being held at an unsafe height during a hard landing, which could cause passenger injury or block emergency evacuation.

Operators must replace monitors by deadline

If you operate Boeing 757-200 or -300 airplanes with PSU-mounted video monitors, you must replace monitors that lack secondary retention lanyards. The AD is effective December 1, 2026; airplanes not identified in Boeing service information must complete replacements within 60 months after that date. The FAA estimates the AD affects 85 U.S.-registered airplanes and gives per-monitor cost estimates: $2,989 per Burrana monitor (labor $255 + parts $2,734), $609 per Panasonic monitor (labor $255 + parts $354), and up to $2,989 per monitor for airplanes not identified in Boeing service information; an airplane may have up to 33 monitors.

Freighter‑converted 757‑200s excluded

If a Boeing Model 757-200 has been converted to a freighter using supplemental type certificate STC ST01529SE, this AD does not apply because those conversions remove all PSU-mounted video monitors. Operators of airplanes converted under STC ST01529SE are not required to perform the replacements.
