Fingerprints used to decide eligibility and access

Fingerprints collected on SF 87 are used as part of a national criminal history check in background investigations to establish facts for decisions about whether you are eligible for logical and physical access to Government facilities and systems, suitable for Federal employment, fit to perform work under a Government contract, eligible for sensitive positions, or eligible for access to classified information.

You may need to submit SF 87 fingerprints

If you apply for Federal employment, are a Federal employee under review, are being considered to work under a Government contract, or seek long-term access to Federal facilities or systems, you may be asked to complete Standard Form (SF) 87 fingerprint charts. The agency estimates 41,500 total respondents annually, with each response taking about 5 minutes, for a total annual burden of 3,458 hours (responses per respondent: 1).
