To direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to submit to Congress a report on the use of cameras in medical facilities of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Sponsored By: Representative McKinley, David B. [R-WV-1]
Became Law
Summary
Stronger oversight of cameras in VA medical facilities. The law requires the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to submit to the House and Senate Committees on Veterans' Affairs within one year a comprehensive report, prepared with VA operations, health, and facilities offices, that reviews policies and maintenance for video cameras used for patient safety and law enforcement, analyzes where and how cameras monitor staff, patients, and drug storage, explains actions to preserve patient privacy, and offers recommendations on placement, data storage, supervisor review of recordings, staffing to monitor live footage, funding needed to address shortfalls, and any other appropriate measures. It defines "camera" as any video camera used for patient safety or law enforcement and excludes cameras used solely by the VA Inspector General to assist in criminal investigations.
