Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2022
Sponsored By: Representative Luria, Elaine G. [D-VA-2]
Became Law
Summary
Ties veterans' and survivors' compensation to the Social Security cost-of-living increase. This law raises disability compensation, additional payments for dependents, the clothing allowance, and dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses and children by the same percentage as Social Security's COLA. The increases take effect December 1, 2022. It preserves a special administrative rule so certain veterans under Public Law 85-857 have their rates adjusted consistently. The Department of Veterans Affairs must publish the adjusted rates in the Federal Register on the same timetable as Social Security's FY2023 publication.

VA disability and survivor checks increase
Beginning December 1, 2022, VA increases the amounts that were in place on November 30, 2022. The raise equals the Social Security cost-of-living percentage. It covers disability pay, extra pay for dependents, the clothing allowance, and survivors' benefits for spouses and children. VA may also adjust some older legacy rates to match. VA publishes the new rates by Social Security's publication date for fiscal year 2023.
