Deadlines to modernize pilot alert system

By September 30, 2024, the FAA finishes the Federal NOTAM System and sets up a backup. The FAA must brief Congress on plans to deliver machine-readable, filterable alerts in the ICAO format. This gives pilots one consistent format for U.S. and international flights. The law also defines FAA and NOTAM to make the scope clear.

New task force to fix pilot alerts

The law requires the FAA to set up a NOTAM (pilot alert) Task Force within 180 days. It includes airlines, airports, pilots and dispatchers, FAA unions, and safety, human factors, and cybersecurity experts. The group reviews how alerts are made and shown, and how to improve accuracy, speed, relevance, and security. It must report to Congress within 1 year; it ends on that date or after 18 months. The FAA can carry out its recommendations, and the law avoids duplicating prior FAA work.
