Fort Ontario Holocaust Refugee Shelter National Historical Park Establishment Act
Sponsored By: Representative Tenney, Claudia [R-NY-24]
In Committee
Summary
Creates a national historical park to preserve and interpret the experiences of 982 World War II refugees at Fort Ontario. The bill would establish the Fort Ontario Holocaust Refugee Shelter National Historical Park in New York as a unit of the National Park System once the Secretary of the Interior determines enough land or interests in land within the map's Proposed Boundary has been acquired. The Secretary must publish a Federal Register notice within 30 days of that determination and the map dated September 2024 will be on file. The Secretary may enter cooperative agreements with the State or other partners for interpretation and restoration. Land within the boundary may be acquired by donation, purchase with donated or appropriated funds, or exchange, and land owned by the State or a political subdivision may be acquired only by donation. A general management plan must be completed within three fiscal years after funds are made available.

New Fort Ontario Holocaust Park
If enacted, the bill would create the Fort Ontario Holocaust Refugee Shelter National Historical Park in New York as a unit of the National Park Service once the Secretary finds enough land in the map’s "Proposed Boundary" has been acquired. The Secretary would have to publish a notice of establishment in the Federal Register within 30 days of that finding, and the park boundary map dated September 2024 would be kept on file for public inspection. The Secretary would be able to acquire land by donation, purchase with donated or appropriated funds, or exchange, but land owned by the State or its political subdivisions could only be accepted by donation. The Secretary would be able to enter cooperative agreements for interpretation and to restore nearby historic resources (with reasonable public access), and must finish a general management plan within 3 fiscal years after funds are provided to carry out the park.
