Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Bigger TEACH Grants and service help

If enacted, the annual TEACH Grant cap would rise from $4,000 to $8,000. Two statutory caps tied to TEACH service would increase: one from $16,000 to $32,000 and the other from $8,000 to $16,000. Early childhood education would be added to the subject list and teaching in a high‑need early childhood program could count toward the service requirement. The Department would send an electronic certificate when you finish required service and would be prohibited from imposing money penalties for failing to complete service. TEACH Grant funding would also be protected from automatic sequestration orders issued on or after enactment.

Some schools lose TEACH eligibility

If enacted, institutions described in subsection (a)(1)(A) of section 102 of the Higher Education Act would be excluded from the TEACH Grant definition. That means students who attend those listed institutions would not qualify for TEACH Grants under the revised term. This change would take effect on enactment.

Rules for credited TEACH Grants

If enacted, any TEACH Grant disbursement that is credited to your school account would have to be applied to the program's full cost of attendance as defined in law. That means credited grant money must go to the charges counted under the official cost rules, which reduces flexibility in how you could use credited funds.
