Study and cleanup for San Pedro Basin
This bill would direct NOAA to run a San Pedro Basin program to study dumping of "covered waste." "Covered waste" would include DDT, DDT byproducts, and other industrial wastes such as military explosives, radioactive waste, and refinery byproducts. NOAA would monitor disposal patterns, study environmental and food-web impacts, develop tools usable at other ocean sites, assess bioremediation, and would be able to award research grants. The bill would authorize $6 million per year for fiscal years 2028 through 2034 and would require NOAA to report to Congress within 3 years on a research and bioremediation strategy and identify other offshore dump sites.
