More care for veterans in need

If enacted, the bill would let the VA provide care, treatment, and rehabilitative services to veterans with serious mental illness. It would also cover veterans who are homeless. The VA could provide services directly or by contract with community treatment facilities, including halfway houses. This could apply even if a veteran is not eligible for VA hospital, nursing home, or domiciliary care under current law. The changes would take effect 90 days after enactment. They would also add the new eligibility rule into the law's definition of "veteran."
